well...now that I finished Middlesex, the other books on my list of started books are holding no real appeal and I'm stuck on what to read next. I made a deal with myself, the infamous book diet, so I have no less than 40 unread books in my house that must (ok, should) be read before I purchase any new books, but I still can't find anything I want to read. I do have a library card and library books are part of the book diet, so if anyone has any suggestions, I'm game!
oh...and if you have any suggestions on how to calm a super fluttery, not quite nausea inducing stomach, I'd love to hear those too!!!
and the ever persistent insomnia!
it started as random ramblings (that I'm still blaming on Heddy) about life, guiding, Pax Lodge, knitting, postcards and whatever else spewed forth from my keyboard...it hasn't changed too much, except now J is part of our life. And well, I write a lot about her and not as much (as I used to) about those other things

wedding bells everywhere...
they're ringing like mad! We have been to one wedding already this year and have been invited to three more. We're only able to attend two of those three because the other one is in Australia. I'd love to go, but it's not even worth dreaming about this year...too bad!
And then this morning I got an email from Leena to say that almost three weeks ago, she and Lasse got married...the pictures are so nice. What a wonderful way to start the day...with a big smile because my friend is so happy!

The wedding looked like it was a lot of fun and they look so happy.

And Aada is so cute and she's getting so big!!!

CONGRATULATIONS LEENA AND LASSE (AND AADA TOO)...All the very best to all of you!
I'm getting really excited about Megan and Hans' wedding...Edna, Hiromi, Sarah and Sarah's mom are all coming to Canada for the wedding. They're all going to spend a few days with us in Vancouver and we're all planning on staying at the same hotel in Saanichton. Megan has created an amazing brochure of things to do in Vancouver and they have planned a whole itinerary of things to do with all their family and friends in the six days after the wedding. Yup...it's getting exciting...I can't wait to see the girls and I am so excited that Megan and Hans are getting married!

early morning insomnia
Wow...insomnia seems to be a pattern on these things lately...Heddy and I are both seemingly regular sufferers of the evil thing...
Apparently just when you're getting used to the thing and creating ways and routines around it, it mutates. Like mine. Last night I hit the pillow and I was out cold. So tired from everything I've been doing and from the definite lack of sleep due to INSOMNIA that I just completely zonked out.
YAY!
I've been waiting for that moment for weeks...there was no tossing and turning, no turning the light on to try to read myself to sleep, none of that annoying feeling where my eyelids are so heavy they feel like someone poured cement in them and they'll barely stay propped open, yet they won't let me sleep, just pure and total zonked-outness....ahhhhhh....
until 4:54. And then 5:03 and then 5:08 and then 5:11 and it goes on and on...so finally and 6:17 I gave up and decided that if I was indeed going to be awake, at least I could do something productive with the time...
now the cement feeling is back....and I have a full day ahead of me...
will I ever win this battle?????

another word about prizes
Shock...surprise...oh no...sounds like some of the prize winners missed the oh-so-colourful announcement of the prizes...
To recap:
"And prizes go to (in absolutely NO PARTICULAR ORDER):
fifers for ovaries and being the first to EMAIL her answers as well as the first to ask if she won a mere 30 seconds later!
punk for her super-duper, CAPITALIZED, exclamation-marked answers, and the especially creative "A FIVE-LEGGED WINGED BEASTY!!!" can't you just feel the excitement?!
heddy for the long, entertaining thought process answers and for almost, but not quite getting Maid of the Mist."
I hope all prizes will be delivered soon and then the lovely photo of punk can grace these pages (joined by photos of fifers and heddy with their awesome, very cool prizes)

feels like winter
Here I am, at the beginning of June, all bundled up in sweats and a blanket. Normally, even cold me would think this was an indication of a cold or something, but no, not today. The rain is coming down in sheets. The rain has been coming down in sheets for hours.
When I woke up this morning, I thought, hey, my alarm hasn't gone off yet, but why am I wide awake? I lay there on my back looking at the ceiling, willing myself to go back to sleep. From the little bit of light sneaking in from behind the blinds and curtains, I knew it was no earlier than about 5:15. Finding this insomnia hard to believe, I finally rolled over and realized that, ooops, didn't set the alarm and the reason it was dark out side was not because it was early in the morning, but because it was 9:15 and miserable outside.
Yeah, I was late for work.
I left the house in a spring jacket, waterproof, but no hood, thinking, by lunch time it will be blistering hot again, just like it was yesterday. BUT NO. By the time I left work to head to an appointment, it was pouring. Thank goodness I had planned to stop by my house to pick up my Guide uniform on the way...not only did I switch from the waterproof jacket with no hood to one with a hood, I also had to change my pants because I was DRENCHED from the rain...and it has barely let up.
I guess Mother Nature wants us Vancouverites to know what it's like in the Southern Hemisphere right now...except we already had winter....bring summer back!!!!!
Wow, it's suprisingly easy to ramble on about rain when you can't sleep...
oh, insomnia...insomnia...
maybe I'll have an insomnia inspired epiphany tonight just like Heddy did the other night. (Does it count if I have the same epiphany?)

all done!
Whew!

After a few months of slogging away at the afghan, tonight I finally pulled that end through the loop and finished it. I have just a few ends to weave in and then the afghan will get delivered to its intended owner on Saturday or Sunday. And you know what, even though it took hours and hours (believe me the recipient is worth it) I would totally make another one. Although this time, the afghan is for ME! I guess that means I'm off to Zellers/Stedmans for some cheap(ish) soft yarn in somewhat large quantities.
And of course, since my fingers are always itching for something to knit and since knitting is hugely therapeutic and relaxing for me, I have started another project. This one is a baby blanket for one of the never ending stream of babies that our friends have been producing lately. It's very exciting. I think there are four or five couples we know who are all due in October/November.

The photos from the triathlon have been fixed. Kai, Devon, Kelsey and Sandra are no longer little specs/ants and you can actually see the expression on Kelsey's face in some of the other photos.

Remember, I said there would be prizes....Well, they're here!!! I have them. Punk has hers. Heddy and Fifers need to email me and let me know how the prize exchange should happen. Once the prizes have been distributed, they will be revealed! I got them at Stedmans V&S in Osoyoos...cool stuff I'm telling you!

GO TEAM HARDCORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A few years ago, Kelsey decided to compete in the Kelowna Apple Triathlon and she was really into training hard(core). Rebecca figures triathlons should be a team event, so Kelsey earned herself the nickname Team Hardcore. Unfortunately that triathlon got rained out by a freak Kelowna storm, so I have never seen Kelsey do a triathlon.

So, in an attempt to remedy my Kelsey-triathlon-spectating deficiency, yesterday Alex and I got up bright and early and drove to Osoyoos to surprise Kelsey who completed her first half Ironman triathlon in Oliver today.
We took the Hope-Princeton highway which I haven't been on for years. It's scary how much the pine beetles have destroyed in there, but it is still a pretty drive. We had lunch in the booming metropolis of Princeton...thank goodness for Subway!

I came very close to finishing the incredible, never ending afghan...

After, a little shopping excursion to Stedmans in downtown Osoyoos, where I increased my wool stash in anticipation of a number of friends/family members having babies in the next six months or so,

we met Kelsey with my Dad and Rebecca at a restaurant in Osoyoos. We timed it perfectly as Kelsey was in the bathroom when we got there, so we just sat down at the table. She was completely shocked and surprised and the entire section of the restaurant thought it was so cool that we'd surprise...most people were eating pasta, so they were probably all getting ready for the big half Ironman.

This morning was rainy and grey, but we got our coffee and were at the start line to cheer Kelsey on at 8:00 am.

Kelsey kept us entertained throughout the race, waving, smiling and pumping her fists for her spectators - she had eleven of us out to see her!

Once she had transitioned onto her bike,

we went to downtown Oliver, which is vibrating with activity on a Sunday (ha!), and found ourselves some brunch

before hanging out on a street corner,

awaiting the blur of colour as Kelsey sped by on her bike.

The last leg of the race was the run and Kelsey paused on her way past to give our official sign waver, Rebecca, a high five.

By the time she came up to the finish line that one final time, she had a noisy, participatory cheering squad helping her along. Uncle Mike ran the last kilometre or so with Kelsey and as she came over the crest of the hill to where we were all eagerly awaiting her, Auntie Sany ran onto the course with her and she was joined by Devon and Kai on their long boards.

What a fun day, even though it was wet to begin with!
Some numbers (any timing number is so totally unofficial still!):
2 km swim (20/18 split or so)
93 km cycle
21 km run
overall time of 6:39 or something like that
11 spectators
2 long boards
3 bikes (one for Kelsey, two for the relatives)
1 cute puppy
at least 6 cameras capturing the insanity
1 wolf whistling twin sister

why is it only 2:30?
Why, all week did 5:00 come too fast and today it feels like it will never get here???
Most days this week I looked at the clock thinking it was at least an hour or two earlier than it was and it wasn't...yesterday I figured I must have at least an hour until my meeting but really I only had five minutes.
Today...I had yummy Mexican food for lunch and now I'm ready for a nap and it should be 6:00, but no, it's only 2:30!!!!!!!!!!
THANK GOODNESS IT'S FRIDAY (even if my brain thinks it's Tuesday)
