Photo Scavenger Hunt

85. Choose a month from the 26 things photography scavenger hunt archive and do the scavenger hunt

This is a really late post from the first 101 in 1001!

J and I had an evening when we were in Kelowna in June when my mom took C for about an hour so we could go to the park. J wanted to do something “fun.” She picked the alphabet for this one (May 2008). It was lots of fun searching for the right things for each letter and it was fun to see who things are different from J’s perspective!

a

A is for ant (can you spot it? It’s tiny)

b

B is for bench

c

C is for car

d

D is for dandelion

e

E is for emptying. J filled her boot up with pebbles and then couldn’t figure out why she couldn’t get it off. Once she tipped them out, it was no problem!

f

F is for fountain

g

G is for goal

h

H is for home (or hole)

i

I is for insect

j

J is for…J!

k

K is for kick

l

L is for light

m

M is for moss

n

N is for needles

o

O is for Oregon grape

p

P is for park

q
Q is for “Queen of the Castle”

r

R is for rocks

s

S is for shadow

t

T is for teeter totter

u

U is for uphill

v

V is for view

w

W is for wasp’s nest

x

X is for X

y
Y is for yummy Yop!

z
Z is for zooooooooooooooom

Rested

8. Go to bed no later than 10:00 pm every "school" night for a week

This is really something I should be doing all the time. I like getting up early…I like the world before most people are awake and if I go to bed at 10, I can easily be up by 6 or 6:30 and even maybe get a shower. Maybe because an infant is mighty unpredictable when it comes to wake up time and C wants to eat RIGHT NOW when she does wake up.

Last fall I had no choice but to go to bed. My pregnant body wasn’t having it any other way! For a few weeks, Alex was working the morning shift (up at 3:30) and everyone in our household was usually tucked into bed by 8:30. There were nights when we couldn’t wait for J to get to bed because we were both so tired..

As we get better with C’s feeding and sleeping, I am going to try to get myself to bed by 10. Alex is mostly working nights right now and we put our tv in storage, so I have no reason and no excuse to stay up!

On that note, I’m putting myself to bed!

Wardrobe purging

5. Sort out all of my clothes and take the ones I'm never going to wear again or that don't fit to charity (or toss if they're in bad shape)
7. Pack away all of J's clothes and things that are too small or too young for her

I did all of J’s clothes in the fall of 2011 and mine this spring, but really, these are ongoing challenges. J’s clothes get too small seasonally, sometimes sooner and I should probably go through my clothes every season too…I couldn’t believe some of the stuff I found in my closet. There were clothes that I don’t remember buying and couldn’t remember why I would have ever thought they were worth buying. There were clothes that hadn’t fit in an eternity and if they ever did fit again, were not likely to ever be back in style. There were a few things that I loved far too much and just to suck it up and toss them…yes, you hoodie with the frayed hem and giant elbow holes.

When we were getting ready for C to arrive, Alex brought all of J’s clothes out of storage for me. We didn’t know if C would be a boy or a girl, so I first sorted the clothes by size and then sorted the newborn ones into a pile of definitely girl stuff and a pile that we could use either way.

There were FIVE giant rubbermaid containers. FIVE! J isn’t even five yet. And two of them were just baby clothes. It was crazy, but I haven’t bought a single piece of clothing for C. She has received some cute outfits and gifts, but so far, she’s doing great with J’s baby stuff.

Dinner and a movie is the same as a day, right?

3. Have a sisters' day without J

One weekend back in February, J was supposed to go to Kelowna to hang out with my parents. Alex was away for the weekend and I was dreaming of my lovely weekend, alone. I was going to have my very own staycation that involved sleeping in, hanging out with my sisters, a Downton Abbey marathon and little else. But then J got sick. My mom was already in town for a meeting, so she changed her plane ticket…

I didn’t get my weekend alone (see #69 on the first list), but I did get my time out with my sisters. We ate dinner at Nuba and then saw Side Effects. I love Nuba and I think we all enjoyed Side Effects…I’m not sure enjoyed is the right word…but we liked it…

Trying to plan an entire day with my sisters was difficult, so I figured we could opt for an evening. The goal was decent time together, just the three of us, so that was accomplished…maybe if I didn’t work during the week and Teamhardcore didn’t work/train/race on the weekends and Rebar didn’t just have an ever-changing schedule, a day would have been possible.

I’m pretty sure this is on the list again this time, so we’ll see what we get up to…maybe we’ll actually get to have a day out together! [edit: yes, it’s #5]

Little Fish

2. Enroll J in swimming lessons before she turns 3

Break time! There’s lots to do in our apartment, but I need a break. Baby C has been learning to take a bottle and that has been a time consuming endeavour. It’s still early, but I thought while I have a few minutes to myself, I’d do something other than a chore…and still aim to be in bed by 10:00. Look at me, a party animal in my old age!

J has taken swimming lessons a few times, but these pictures are from January of 2011. She was sooo little!

mr fishy

Finding a swimming lesson time that wasn’t during the day on a week day or multiple afternoons a week was tricky. The weekend lessons fill up quickly, but we managed to find a pool (one of the cooler, therefore less desirable for little kids) that had lessons that weren’t at nap time (or the crack of dawn) on a Saturday.

swimming with daddy

Most weeks, Alex took J and they had a blast. I usually sat in the bleachers and watched, although I did go in with her a few times. The rest of her lessons were at the same pool on a weekday afternoon – I’d pick her up at daycare and head straight to the pool. She would sleep really well those nights!

Less than six months to go

Ack…my 101 in 1001 expires on June 11. That’s less than 6 months away and there are some big things happening in our lives between now and then.

I figured it was time for an update (mostly for me to figure out where I stand with this challenge). I have 42 things that are not crossed off…that’s a lot…but, some of them are in progress, so I just have to finish them and some are fairly simple to do, I just have to do them. I think I’ll get most of them done – two things are going to make a few of them tricky – being pregnant and possibly moving in the next 6 months, but I’ll do what I can.

On top of the 42 not quite complete items, I have 27 things to blog about or finish blogging about. That’s a lot of work ahead of me. So if I ever complain I have nothing to do or nothing to write about, someone should remind me about this list!

Is anyone else still doing their 101 list??

Things I have left to do:

1. Fit back into pre-tumble down the stairs clothes – not sure if this will happen considering I’m pregnant right now…but it might. Baby is due in April, but I doubt I’ll be back down there in six weeks.

3. Have a sisters' day without J

5. Sort out all of my clothes and take the ones I'm never going to wear again or that don't fit to charity (or toss if they're in bad shape) – this is definitely in progress, but it’s hard right now (see #1 – pregnant)

6. Buy nothing for a week [exceptions: emergencies, non-negotiable bills (ie heating, mortgage)]

10. Really reconnect with an old friend – I haven’t decided if this is in progress or done or neither

13. Weigh less on day 1001 than on day 1 – unlike #1, this will likely actually happen.

14. Complete a full crossword puzzle

19. Go on 10 "adventures" – this is partly done. It might be all done, but I haven’t blogged about it. I need to check.

21. Do an insurance inventory of the contents of our home

22. Get our 72 hour emergency kit properly stocked

23. Make photos books for J's first two years

30. Make pizzelle

33. Make dinner from the Best of Bridge cookbook five times [2/5]

35. Make dinner from the Good Housekeeping cookbook five times [2/5]

40. Decide what we're going to put on the clutter collecting wall in the living room and buy it/have it made – I’ve decided, but since we might be moving in the next few months, I might not buy it…it doesn’t make sense to have a fairly custom piece of furniture that won’t necessarily work in a new place

41. Hire a painter to finish painting – this has to get done if we’re going to move

42. Install a back splash in the kitchen – this has to get done if we’re going to move

44. Clear J's closet of the boxes from the move46. Install more shelves in the upstairs storage room

53. Visit at least two of the places in Alex's day trips book [1/2]

55. Watch all the nominees for Best Picture for one year (not necessarily the current year)

61. Host a board game night

63. Go to Seattle on the train – likely not going to happen…pregnant+no passport=no trips across the border

64. Have a mini-reunion with some of my HPA friends – likely not going to happen…pregnant+no passport=no trips across the border, so unless they come to see me…

65. Go to Portland – likely not going to happen…pregnant+no passport=no trips across the border

69. Spend at least one night away from both Alex and J – we’ll see…see pregnant reason above

71. Sew those secret Christmas presents for those specific people (yeah, yeah, I'll elaborate later)

73. Blog about each one of the 101 things – still in progress since I’m not done yet!

74. Answer "50 questions that will free your mind"

76. Send a special thank you letter just because

79. Make a list of 101 beautiful things in my life

81. Put wedding photos in an album

96. Put change in someone's expired parking meter

97. Pay for a stranger's meal/coffee/purchase

100. Put $5 in a special savings account for every item I cross off this list [59/101 saved]

101. If day 1001 comes and there are still items left, donate $20 per item to a charity that is relevant to our lives at that time

101.1 Have a new list of 101 things ready by day 1001 (containing anything that didn't get done this time!) – I’ve already started!

Things I need to blog about:

2. Enroll J in swimming lessons before she turns 3 – um yeah…this happened two years ago…

16. Update address book – umm…I did this over a year ago

City garden clean up

J and I planted our lovely balcony garden in the summer and it looked beautiful and produced a few tomatoes, a handful of strawberries and a handful of green beans and some herbs. And then things got a bit nuts at our house. And then fall happened. And our poor garden got neglected. I take full blame for it looking like this:

 dead garden

Last week I’d had enough of looking and dead, dreary plants, so I got myself a big bag and some shears and went to work. It took less than 15 minutes to get the deck looking like this:

tidier garden

I left anything that still had signs of life, cut back the perennials (we’ll see if they’re perennials on our deck) and pulled up most of the annuals.

And I discovered something else. A tiny little bit of green pushing up out of this pot.

signs of new life

Sometime in the fall, J found a bulb somewhere and carried it around with her for days. She wanted to plant it, so we stuck it in a pot that had once contained beans. I didn’t expect the poor thing to do much. It had lost its “shell” (I don’t know what you call the outside part – skin?), it was bruised and it had a couple of little nicks in it. I figured we’d plant it, we’d both forget about it and in the spring we’d plant more beans or something. Apparently that little bulb had other plans and it was far more resilient than I thought it wass. J asked me today what colour the flowers will be, but we have no idea what is or if it will even get to the point where it can bloom.

Snow Day!

27. Build a snow man with J

The week before Christmas we got some snow. Well, for Vancouver it was a lot of snow. I had an early morning ultrasound at the hospital and I wasn’t sure if I’d actually get home after it – the street where our garage door opens is quite steep and they often close it when it snows. I don’t know if they closed it, but I know it was still open when I got home even though the three or four streets to the east of us were closed.

building a snow man

We had already decided to keep J home from daycare that day, but as soon as I got home, she was ready to go out and make a snow man. We didn’t venture further than our courtyard – the snow was heavy and wet and it was chilly out. We still managed to make a little snow man though.

snowman

Right after we got back inside, it started snow even harder and the flakes were huge – bigger than a twonie for sure. I was glad we didn’t have to go out in the weather – things on the roads were a bit crazy…we saw our fair share of weather related drama from our font windows.

snow day

And because it is Vancouver, most of the snow was gone the following morning. The remnants of the snow man lasted a few days.

Greetings Gone

11. Mail Christmas cards before December 24th

I definitely didn't get my cards mailed before December 24 last year or the year before, but this year, somehow, I did! Yay!

christmas cards for the mailbox

I had them all done before the end of the second week of December and more than half went out on November 30. J was feeling a bit under the weather the last weekend of November and when she wasn't sleeping or cuddled up on the couch watching TV or reading, she just wanted to sit at the table and make crafts. And that was the perfect time for me to sit and write cards.

She had a great time helping me too - she was the chief sticker applier.

And now that the cards are gone, I have more time to bake and clean the house and pick out gifts.

The purple-with-black-polka-dots cat

18. Make J's Hallowe'en costume

Last November 1, J announced she would be a cat next year. And for the next twelve months she talked about being a cat. So, October rolled around and I decided we better get moving on her costume. That's when she told me she was going to be a purple cat with black polka dots.

So we took a little trip out to Richmond and got some fuzzy black fabric and some purple fabric. J already had a purple headband and purple leggings, so we picked up a purple shirt and we were set.

Her tail and the belt to tie to her were easy to make - I just sewed two tubes - one I closed off at an angle and stuffed and the other I ironed flat and attached the stuffed tail to it.

I cut a bunch of different sized circles of the black fuzzy fabric and randomly sewed them onto the purple shirt.

That was the easy part.

The next night I made the ears...which weren't difficult, just a bit time consuming because I had to punch holes in the cardboard and then lash it to the headband. It took a couple of tries to get it right. Then I covered them with purple and tacked black insides on.

Hallowe'en morning J was super excited - not only did she get to wear her awesome costume, but she got to have cat make-up and sparkly eyes. Of course now she'd like to have cat make-up on everyday!

bye bye kitty
Leaving the kitty at daycare - this kitty loves her puppy

We took the traditional Mulvi Hallowe'en dinner over to Fiona and Jess's and then J went trick or treating in their neighbourhood. Check out the loot - that's from maybe two blocks...more than enough for J!

Weekend Escape - Victoria

19.8 Go on 10 "adventures"

Our world has been a bit crazy lately. And by a bit, I mean it's insane. So Alex and I decided that we'd take a few days off work and daycare and get out of Vancouver and have a little adventure and some rest. Well, we managed to have some adventures...and we did get a little rest too!

Early Thanksgiving Monday we drove out to the ferry terminal to start our little vacation. While we waited for our ferry to arrive so we could board, we did a little browsing in the terminal building.

We checked out the awesome candied apples - Thanksgiving turkeys and spooky Hallowe'en creatures. J and Alex would have had them as their second breakfast...

We had a reservation and because there was very little traffic, we were one of the first cars on the ferry. We had an awesome view from the car deck!

beautiful day for a ferry ride

We did go up to the passenger decks and took J outside to see the view.

We waved at the ferry going in the opposite direction - can you see J's Auntie K. on the ferry? We waved hard because she's there (maybe...she was in Victoria for the weekend, running in the marathon)

Once we docked in Swartz Bay, we decided we were hungry, so we made a stop in Sidney-by-the-Sea for a lunch of, what else, fish and chips. We also picked up a few postcards for J's penpal. Then it was off to Victoria and Beacon Hill Park. J slept most of the way and was quite excited when we got out of the car and we were at the petting zoo.

After a long time at the petting zoo (and some very thorough hand washing) we decided that we should find the playground and burn off some energy. J had a great time at the playground, racing around like crazy. We went to our hotel, dropped our things off and went in search of some dinner. J was a trooper and walked 1.5 kilometres to dinner at a yummy Italian place called Fiamo.

We arrived early, before the dinner rush, and had a lovely meal. It was so good. J was thrilled with her spaghetti and meatballs and the waiter couldn't believe how good J was and that we'd brought our own entertainment for her while we were waiting for food (colouring stuff and little Robert Munsch books).

We loved the atmosphere and decoration in Fiamo almost as much as we loved our soup and pasta. Check out the bike on the wall...just a taste of the decor.

After we stuffed ourselves, we went in search of ice cream (fine, gelato) because J declared it wasn't a "real" adventure if we didn't eat ice cream. We ended up having gelato both evenings and J had ice cream at lunch the second day and she just couldn't believe her luck because she "already had ice cream the day before." It didn't take much to convince her that we could have some special treats when we were on vacation!

it's not an adventure without ice cream

Alex loves gelato, so he had no argument with gelato on consecutive days. Alex ate gelato at least twice a day when we were in Rome for our honeymoon! Not sure how this compares....

The "Christmas" building...aka the Parliament building. Apparently any kind of light display automatically means Christmas lights...

The next day we left the camera at home, but we managed to take in an IMAX movie, J did every gallery of the Royal BC Museum (her favourites were the special map exhibit and the old street) and we went for a long walk. We picked out books at Munro's Books, because what trip to Victoria is complete without a visit to Munro's? We capped day number two off with dinner with my friend Andrea at Rebar. YUM! More good food and some excellent company.

It was a great little break for us - and yes, there was some rest...when you have a four year old who you make walk 4+ km a day, a daddy used to working the morning shift, and pregnant mommy, everyone is ready to fall into bed by 8:00!
