it started as random ramblings (that I'm still blaming on Heddy) about life, guiding, Pax Lodge, knitting, postcards and whatever else spewed forth from my keyboard...it hasn't changed too much, except now J is part of our life. And well, I write a lot about her and not as much (as I used to) about those other things

Saturday morning just for me
J is with her grandparents and I’m torn. Part of me is enjoying this quiet, relaxing morning before Alex gets up and we play tourist for the morning and then do the wedding thing this afternoon and evening. It’s so peaceful and it’s time for just me.
But a little tiny piece of me thinks, wouldn’t it be great if J were here. We could share some banana bread. We could talk about the BOATS! in the harbour. We could snuggle up a chat and giggle the way you can only do with a two year old and you can only do first thing in the morning before the busy child sets in. We could visit the park and play when we go down to the market later. We could take a little walk around the hotel and run on the big lawns.
But...she’s with her grandparents. She has probably had peaches and maybe even some of Bop’s pancakes for breakfast. She’s probably already gone down the slide and mowed the lawn and talked about airplanes and run a few laps of the back yard and brought at least a few books to Bop or Lallie, likely when they had their hands full, and implored “Read?”
I miss my little lady, but since I don’t get mornings like this very often, I think maybe I’ll just take the time to enjoy my book, some coffee, the view, and maybe write a little bit of something. And do it all without the help of a two year old who is clearly having the time of her life somewhere else!

Twenty-five random things about me
25 Random Things About Me
1. I ignored this note thing until Minda harassed (okay, gently prodded) me about it!
2. I love staying at home with Baby J and would like to be able to do it all the time and never go back to work, but part of me is actually looking forward to going back to work...I may not feel the same way in September, but we'll see.
3. I have a serious book addiction. I have put myself on a book diet which means I am not allowed to buy books for myself unless someone gives me a gift card to the bookstore. I've been borrowing books from my aunt and uncle's collection instead. I tried to pare down my collection when we unpacked this time, but I only managed to find three books I could bear to part with.
4. I have a love-hate relationship with our new place. I'm hoping the hate part will go away once we paint and maybe get a couple of pieces of new furniture...
5. The smiles I get first thing in the morning from Baby J make getting out of bed worth it and bearable...even when she decides to wake up before 6:00 am.
6. I only lived in London for just over 1.5 years total. I've lived in Vancouver for 10+ of the last 13 years. London feels more like a second home than Vancouver. I still feel a bit transient in Vancouver. I have good friends and family in Vancouver, but I feel like many of the special people in my life are scattered around the world...probably because of the time I spent living in Hawaii, London and Switzerland!
7. When I'm working, I only get to see Alex for about an hour, maybe an hour and a half everyday - it's hard and we try to make up for it on weekends. That's part of the reason I'm enjoying maternity leave so much - now I get to see him for four or five hours a day and we even get to eat together!
8. I love going to bed early and getting up early, but I also like staying up late and sleeping in. I need 8-9 hours of sleep to function...unfortunately it usually works out that on the days I stay up late, I need to get up early. Not so good for the sleep quota.
9. I worked in an industry that required talent and skills that I know I don't possess. Thank goodness I was in administration not production, because I have those skills. When I told people where I worked, the looks of disbelief I got from the people who knew me were great. The looks of relief when they heard I was in administration were even better! They made me smile every time!
10. I have an irrational fear of birds. All birds. Alive birds, dead birds, stuffed birds, photographs of birds in books.
11. When I was a kid I thought there was a monster/bad guy/bird living under my bed. I'd turn the light off and take a running leap from the door to my bed so the monster/bad guy/bird couldn't grab my ankle. Good thing my bedroom was tiny.
12. We shared the Blue House with at least two ghosts.
13. I learned more about the Bible from my AP Lit class than I did from Sunday School.
14. When I was in high school, I used to go camping at least once a month. I miss it and I'm trying to convince Alex that camping is fun.
15. I don't like condiments, but our fridge is full of them because I married a condiment fiend.
16. I love that my family is large and that we enjoy spending time together.
17. I had my first migraine when I was ten or eleven. At the worst, they were coming every seven to ten days. My usual trigger is abrupt changes in barometric pressure or altitude. Sometimes lack of sleep, too much sleep, dehydration or food can also trigger them. They have varied in severity and frequency since I started getting them. One of the best side effects of being pregnant was the complete absence of migraines, even when the Vancouver weather was crazy!
18. When I was admitted to the hospital three weeks early to have Baby J, our coworkers knew, but we didn't tell our families until she had arrived safely.
19. I'm a pack rat. Really and truly a pack rat. It's mostly organized, but I know I don't need all that stuff. I'm trying to be more ruthless at getting rid of stuff. It's working better in some areas of my life than others (see #3 above and #20 below).
20. I also have an addiction to stationery and all things related to it. I have three drawers and a bread box full of stationery. I have more pens than I could possibly ever use. But certain types of paper demand certain types of pens. Too bad we're no longer a society that uses the postal service much. I'm kind of on a stationery diet too, but it's not working so well.
21. I have a big postcard collection that started when I was seven.
22. When I was at boarding school I got so much mail that they were surprised at the bookstore when there was nothing for me to pick up from my mailbox. Even when I lived in London I got lots of mail. Not so much now...but that's okay!
23. Maybe my addiction is to all things paper - books, stationery, postcards, letters? Hmmmm...
24. I love having an empty laundry basket but I hate doing laundry, in particular the folding, hanging and putting away part. I never iron, but when I lived in London, I found ironing sheets to be very relaxing and a good time to think!
25. Everyday I look at Alex and Baby J and I can't believe they're my family or how happy they make me! I think I'm pretty lucky to have both of them!

Twenty-four hours
There were some predictable things like lingerie for the late night/middle of the night hours, cookbooks, a rice cooker/steamer, beer glasses and a pretzel dish, and a wine and cheese tray complete with beautiful crystal wine glasses for the hours around dinner time. There were some interesting choices like baking dishes and wooden spoons for 5:00 am, coffee flavoured vodka for first thing in the morning, and some knitting gear for 11:00 pm. We got some wonderful things and I can't wait to start using all the baking stuff we got...it seems the ladies know me well!

My 81st Birthday Bash
Alex sent me away for a loverly massage (thanks!) so he and Stacey could decorate the house.
I came home to the door all decorated and pretty and "30" stuff everywhere in the house.

We had to mix our slushy martinis up - apparently it takes two people to do this. These are the best inventions ever - you buy them at Linens 'n' Things of all places, add the al-co-hol and some water and freeze them for a few hours. Instant blender drinks without the mess of the blender!
Then my lovely cousins arrived and brought with them the evening's entertainment.
What party is complete without a BeDazzler? Not this party, obviously. We all had to try BeDazzling something.
Nate says: No, I don't think I need my jeans BeDazzled tonight, thanks. Besides, I don't really think the BeDazzler should be mixed with al-co-hol. It should only be operated below .08.
Clean up time...interesting how the cheese plate looks like it's been attacked, the pizza boxes are empty and in the garbage (no you can't see them in this picture), there are a few chips in the bowl, and the watermelon, raw veggies, and broccoli are still abundantly present...hmmm...go figure!

One year, three hundred and thirty-one posts...
It's been a year since I was apparently bored beyond boredom and Heddy decided to introduce me to blogging. This is post 331, so I guess my thought that this might not last was WRONG! That's almost, but not quite one post a day (0.91 to be exact)...not bad considering in those 365 days I spent a night in the hospital, a number of days in k-town, Cobble Hill, and Victoria without a computer, my computer died and was resurrected a number of times, I went to Girl Guide camp, and I was forbidden to use the computer during the early days of my recovery. Or maybe that is bad...maybe I shouldn't be telling the world so much about my life...sorry if my boredom remedy is in turn boring!
I'm not entirely sure why I was so bored. I'm deep into the paper demons I whined about last year again this week...year end is so much fun. Anyway, I think I wasn't bored as in "There's nothing to do, so I'm bored," but more likely I was bored as in "I've been doing the same thing for days on end and there's no end in sight and the elves keep breeding paper overnight and it has totally taken over my life and I'm sick of it. So because I'm sick of it, I must be bored."
So, to combat my boredom (which really means, to give me something to do that wasn't PAPERWORK) and to help me learn some basic html so that when the PAPERWORK went away I could concentrate on building a website for our department, Heddy convinced me to start a blog.
Apparently I can focus on something for longer than two nanoseconds, because here I am a year later, still updating my blog...It's interesting, as I go back and read what I wrote because I discover some things I'd totally forgotten about, some things I wish I could forget about, and some things I never want to forget.
I was never good at keeping a diary as a kid...I'd do well for a few days, or even weeks as I got a bit older, and then I'd get bored and the pages would read fun stuff like:
Monday, April 10, 1989
Today I went to school. It was boring.
Tuesday, April 11, 1989
Today I went to school. I don't like my sisters.
Wednesday, April 12, 1989
Today I went to school. Tonight was Guides. It was fun.
psst...do you think, just maybe, I was in school in 1989???
Thursday, April 13, 1989
Today I went to piano. Mr. Welsh says I'm almost ready for Kiwanis.
Friday, April 14, 1989
Today I had to take the bus to school. YUCK. Fiona is spending the night.
Saturday, April 15, 1989
I don't like Fiona. She's mean.
Sunday, April 16, 1989
Today I did my science homework and we had roast beef for dinner.
Monday, April 17, 1989
Fiona ignored me today.
Tuesday, April 18, 1989
Today I went to school. It was boring. I'm going to spend Saturday night at Fiona's.
And the three sentence diary entries would continue for a few weeks and then there'd be nothing. Not that the entries tell anyone much...why didn't I like Fiona? What did she do that was mean? What did I do to deserve the silent treatment (and I'm CERTAIN I deserved it!)? What made us decide to be friends again on Tuesday?
For the record, these diary entries are fake. The real diaries are in the basement and the basement is a scary place. Also for the record, Fiona and I often hated each other after we had a sleepover, but it was most often forgotten within days if not hours. Something to do with not enough sleep usually...Sometimes we'd hate each other and fight all day on Saturday and then ask our completely baffled parents if the sleepoveree could spend the night for a second night...go figure! But we must have done something right, because after all those years and all those sleepovers, we're still friends...
Anyway, I have managed to be more consistent with my "diary keeping" since I start the blog...I don't necessarily write every day, but I do a fairly good job of writing often!
On my blog you can learn all kinds of things about me:
- That I like to knit and knit and knit, a lot
- That I'm a klutz
- That I love books and what I've been reading
- That I miss London and Pax Lodge
- That I'm a big whiner sometimes
- Alex and I love our house
- That I like lists
- That I take pictures of strange stuff
- That I have a big family and I like my family a lot
- That I like paper...pretty paper and postcards
- That my cakes all look the same
- My sister, aka Team Hardcore, is hardcore!
- Alice is my goddaughter
- Lots of people got married last year
- There are "pets" at my house
- There are ghosts at my house
- Alex makes me happy!
- And to make me shut up, just let me be a klutz (see link above) and then I won't be able to use the computer...but I can still take pictures...January and February have fewer entries than the previous months...March doesn't count yet cause we're only half way there...

adventures in wheelchair riding
On Monday, my Mom had some things to do, so Rebecca volunteered to be my babysitter and we decided to go Christmas shopping.
Which meant going to the mall.
The MALL.
UGH.
In the wheelchair.
Which was an adventure...we stuck to stores with fairly wide aisles as a large number of the smaller shops (mostly cooking stores and clothing stores) have their stuff stored very close together which makes for dangerous wheelchair manoeuvring.
It didn't take us long to figure out that the wheelchair isn't the most convenient way to Christmas shop, but we got pretty much everything done that we needed to do.
And discovered a few things:
- People who use a wheelchair regularly must have a lot of patience or really thick skin, or both!
- Some people are very nice and hold doors and help push the wheelchair over pesky door jam things.
- Some people think I'm in the way and I should be at home, not in the mall where I obviously came just to inconvenience them.
- Some people stopped to talk to me and wish me a Merry Christmas just because I was in a wheelchair.
- Some people made eye contact with me, and when I did my best to get out of their way, walked straight into me anyway.
- People who use a manual powered wheelchair must have pretty powerful arms and shoulders. I don't.
- Some people are always in a hurry and think a wheelchair will slow them down, so they huff and puff to get past me and then walk directly in front of me, much slower than I was wheeling (a side note on this one: people walking power past other walkers and then slow down too).
- Some people look at me with total pity and sadness in their eyes. They get a smile and Merry Christmas back from me. And then they don't know what to do. Because a wheelchair=sad and sad people don't smile. I'm not sad...I get frustrated and annoyed sometimes, but I am not sad. I was too lucky and I'm surrounded by too many wonderful people to be sad. Besides, it's Christmas and I LOVE CHRISTMAS!
- Some people think that people in wheelchairs also have problems with their eyes or ears...but I can see you when you gesture and point and I can hear you when you talk about me. Also, when you speak to me, you don't have to yell...there's nothing wrong with my hearing.
- I didn't appreciate my own mobility before this, but after my wheelchair experiences, I will always appreciate my mobility, even when it's limited.
- I didn't appreciate what people in a wheelchair deal with every day from stupid (and not so stupid) people...and I will try harder to be the one to get out of the way of the wheelchair and hold the door and be patient.

home for a rest
I'll have to enjoy it from inside this winter, no making snowmen in my pjs on Christmas morning this year.
My Mom, who had so kindly come to Vancouver to make life easier for both me and Alex, packed up my stuff and my walker and bundled me off to the airport a week earlier than planned. We had all discussed what the next move in the heal-Shannon's-back adventure would be and decided it would be easier for everyone to move me to k-town with my family.
This way Alex doesn't have to organize for more time off work or for friends and family to babysit me while he worked. My Mom doesn't have to worry that maybe one day Alex would go to work and for whatever reason the day's sitter wouldn't make it on time. And we have been able spread the babysitting, night time pill giving and other business out among the various members of my family which has given my Mom a bit of a break during the day and completely relieved Alex of his night time duties. Me, well, my main concern is that my back starts healing so that I can start doing things on my own again.
Improvement has been slow, but steady. I still need the walker to get around most of the time and the wheelchair to get around for long periods of time or where there are lots of people and a risk of being accidentally bumped or jostled. Without going into too much detail, I am now able to use the bathroom alone and have begun the process of mastering the special seat for the shower. Everything happens at a much slower pace than I'm used to but we're all noticing things are getting quicker.
The first day I was home from the hospital, it took Alex two hours to get me from the bed, to the bathroom and then dressed and settled into the chair that was my constant companion in Vancouver. The day I left Vancouver, I still needed assistance, but it only took us twenty minutes. Progress! The set up here is slightly different and I've hit one of the fabled healing plateaus where not much visible progress is happening, but I know I'm healing. The biggest clue is that I've been able to sleep through the night a few times!
Friday is the next doctor's appointment - he will reassess my progress and maybe give a narrower idea of when I might be able to return to work. Right now it's six weeks to six months from the time of the injury. We're getting close to three weeks since the fall, so maybe I'm half way there?
The super-duper pain killers have had a bit of a numbing effect on my brain, although I'm down to half the dose that I was taking when I first came home from the hospital. I have acquired a few new quirks...like I needed any more of those! I have be caught wandering around the house with Post-It notes stuck to my shirt...usually with an address or phone number on them. Because of the walker, it's hard to carry things from place to place, so I'd make trips to the computer for addresses (I think this is the first time ever I've sent ALL of my Christmas cards BEFORE Christmas) and the phone book for phone numbers and then back to my trusty chair to address an envelope or make a phone call. Sometimes, and I'm blaming the super-duper pain killers, I'd forget about the notes and wander around for the better part of the day wearing them.
My lovely sister has nicknamed me Granny-Shanny, I think due to my slipper wearing and chair sitting with a walker in front of me, wrapped in a blanket, prune juice beside me, knitting while watching game shows....even I feel like I'm 80+ years old. I *love* the new diet I'm on until I'm done the super-duper pain killers and their somewhat unpleasant side effects (like babbling on and on and on and bad short term memory and forgetting things and babbling on and on and on...ooops...I already said that).
I can't believe how fortunate I am - partly for not doing more damage to myself but mostly for all the wonderful people who came to visit, offered to spend time with me, made us food and generally were wonderful in their support! The last few weeks would have been brutal without all of them!
Now that I've rambled, rambled, rambled...well, that's all...
oh, and it's still snowing!

On the mend, a mention from Hans and a visit from Jack
I am now able to sit for short periods of time at the computer and thought the best use of that time would be to tell you all what's been happening for the last week or so.
The short version of the story is this:
Last Monday I slipped on the stairs going into our basement. I fell down only two or three, but I fell hard enough to do some damage.
I ended up with a fracture of the left transverse process of the L4 vertebra...Which in my non-technical terms is a fracture of one of my vertebrae, but not the vertebra part, the little wing bit that hangs off the side of the vertebra.
This injury has, unfortunately, made me pretty much housebound. I am currently navigating the house with a walker and I have all kinds of fancy equipment from the Red Cross Equipment Loan Program. This program is one we're now going to support annually. How lucky we are to have access to programs like this!
And just in case I wasn't aware of the wonderful community I am part of, this injury really reminded me of that. Alex was home when I fell because it was our first day of holidays. He got K, our landlady, who sat with me and helped me support myself while we waited for the two crews of paramedics. My wonderful aunt, Tiki, came to the hospital and kept Alex and me company, kept us both calm and harassed the nurses whenever I needed more pain control.
I fell in such a way that I was supporting all my weight on one arm, so K's assistance was invaluable. I was in such an awkward position that they needed five paramedics, a clam shell, and a heck of a lot of morphine to get me up the stairs and out of the house. It also took two ambulances to transport me to the hospital, but that's another story!
The doctors, x-ray technicians and physiotherapist at the hospital were super. It took a long time to figure out what was wrong, but after eliminating hip, femur and pelvis problems, they found the fracture.
After a long night and only a few hours sleep, Alex and Tiki came back to the hospital, with my uncle, Brian, who took the morning off work to get me settled. They brought me home and left Alex to help me into some clean clothes (I had none at the hospital...they're all chopped up and in the rag bag!) while they visited the Red Cross and got us some food.
My Mom arrived on Wednesday afternoon to help us for a few hours before going to a workshop. She came back on Saturday and is here for the week. We have decided that I will go home to K-town a week early with her so that Alex doesn't have to worry about me.
I cannot believe the tremendous support we have received from our families, my colleagues at work, the Human Resources Department at work, the marvellous women I know through Guiding and our other friends.
The prognosis is good. I am mobile right now, but very slow and require a lot of assistance. The doctor is going to reassess me every two weeks, but she felt that I should be feeling much better in the next two to four weeks and hopefully will be back at work within six weeks.
We've started getting visitors (my Dad is coming today!) and that is the best medicine so far. Visitors have kept me from going nuts...
This lovely little boy brought his Mommy and Daddy over to see us on Sunday. We had a great visit and I was feeling well enough I was actually able to hold him (we all got to hold him, doesn't my Mom look happy!)
He's wearing the toque I made a few weeks ago...
Since my accident I've become a toque making factory! Oh, and the surprise knitting from that same post is this:
One last thing...Hans asked how I find things to write about almost daily...I don't know...some days I don't have anything to write about, so I don't, some days there's lots...I noticed my posts were more frequent during the summer and while I was taking a writing class...mostly because we were encouraged to write as often as possible about anything and everything...so all of you have become subject to my ramblings!
Thank you everyone for the the wonderful, warm wishes you sent after our engagement and for the support we've had in the last week. I don't know what we would have done without each and every one of you! If you're in Vancouver and you're not busy, come visit!!! I like visitors!
I won't be able to post very often as I can't sit for very long and the office is a difficult room to get into at the moment...I'll be thinking of you and I'll be back eventually! I can do fun stuff like write letters, so I might get "old fashioned" on you for a while!

It's A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood
Well, now that we've successfully managed to track down all the members of my immediate family and Alex's immediate family, I'm allowed to post the following pictures. This is how Alex and I spent the morning...
Because this is what I'm wearing now....
Here's a close up, because I know SOMEONE will ask.
And, because you've been asking, here's what happened.Yesterday I had to go up to my employer's k-town location. It was gross out. The snow was starting to melt. When I got the airport and put my bag through the x-ray machine, my phone rang. (The x-ray machine people at the airport LOVE me, because this happens all the time). It was my Dad, checking to see if I made it to the airport and if my flight was delayed. I made it. The flight was only delayed by about 15 minutes. Seems as soon as he hung up the phone with me, Alex called to ask my Mom and my Dad if it was okay to ask me to marry him.
I met my Mom at the airport after my meeting and we sat and had coffee for an entire hour and she didn't even blink. YAY MOM!
This morning I realized that I didn't have a bus pass for this month so while we were having breakfast I asked Alex for a bus ticket so I wouldn't be late for work. He insisted on getting it for me even though I insisted that I didn't need a bus ticket to eat my breakfast. Off he went and I just shook my head. SILLY SHANNON!
Alex came back with the bus ticket and then all of a sudden he got down on one knee, showed me the ring and said will you marry me...
I said YES...of course...
So my plan to not be late to work was foiled and now I've got no focus, but it's Friday and I'm taking next week off, so it's OKAY!
That's all...

- Boarding school is both nothing like the books say and everything like the books say
- I thought maybe I was going to boot camp, the rule book had so many rules in it, but somehow all those rules gave me a ton of freedom
- Boardgames are a great way to spend an afternoon or an evening
- I hate moving
- I love cooking
- I don't know what I want to do when I grow up
- My family is the most important thing in my life, followed closely by my friends
- Alex's family has already become part of *my* family
- I feel extremely lucky to have the friends I have
- Sometimes I think that I have more than my share of friends and feel bad because maybe I'm a friend hog
- Alex is one of the most important people in my life
- I miss the house at Christina Lake
- I miss my dog Rex
- I miss my grandpa
- I'm glad my friends are here - I needed them to help me out and take care of me this week
- I liked Australia but I would never go back except that three good friends live there
- I want to go to Ireland for an extended period of time even though they think it's strange that I'm named after a river
- I want to do a road trip across Canada
- I want to move back to Kelowna one day
- It hurts to see how much Alex's mom is suffering
- I can't believe how supportive people can be when they don't even know someone
- After my family, Guiding is my safety net and my support
- My sisters are amazing people and I think I'm lucky to have them
- I take too many pictures with my digital camera
- I'm addicted to books
- I would love to live overseas again, but only if I can take my whole family with me
- I don't like zoos
- I'm afraid of birds
- When I run into Sammy, the woman I assisted in a former life, I always leave feeling grumpy and slightly sick to my stomach
- I enjoy my current boss - mostly because he is very flexible and accommodating and treats me like a real person
- Today I feel totally at ease, really happy and I think I'm content!
