The next chapter

Five and a half years ago we opened this door and started a new chapter of our life that would see our family grow from two to four.

front door

I was hugely pregnant with J and this was the place that would be her first home. By the middle of that day, our place looked like this:

living room after we moved in part 1

But even so we hosted our first dinner. My awesome parents were here to help us move and we got the apartment cleaned and sorted enough to have company. Luckily we didn't have to do anything for dinner...my amazing aunt and uncle brought dinner, dishes, cutlery and a lot of laughter which was great after a really long day. We had a one hour window between when we could get into our new home and when we had to be out of the ghetto Pink Palace. Thank goodness for excellent helpers!

Less than three weeks later, before we were fully unpacked, this little lady made a dramatic entrance into our lives and the Lyons' Den became home to a family of three.

We had lots of fun, celebrated some birthdays and Christmases and then, last April, this happened.

And we made do in the Lyons' Den we had outgrown a year or two before for another nine months...it looked like this for a while

spotlessly spotless(seriously, what family with two small children can sustain this for an extended period of time?)

Today, our little Lyons' Den looks like this...

empty den

much like it did on that hot summer's day five and a half years ago. We made a few changes and a lot of memories. And now our keys belong to another family, also starting a new chapter in their lives. There were a few tears and one emotionally torn five year old went around to each room to say goodbye and I love you. She kissed all the walls and each window and door in her special green room.

And then the chapter ended.

And our next chapter? Well, it begins here:

the door to the next chapter
Goodbye Lyons' Den. You were good to us and we'll miss you, but we are very excited to see what this next chapter brings!

She’s a big girl now!

Today was the big day. The first day of kindergarten. J was a bit excited last night and appeared in our room about 5 times between 4:30 and 5:30. At which point, I decided if any of us were to get any more sleep, the best bet was to let her get in with us. I’m so glad we finally got a queen sized bed.

Despite her middle of the night wakings, J was up on time and ready to go to school. Here is the requisite “at the front door on the first day of school” picture.

She looks pretty rested, doesn’t she??

ready for the weather

And then because fall officially arrived yesterday morning with a thunderstorm and today decided to remind us what it’s really like to live in Vancouver, she got her rain gear on. This is a horrible time of year for torrential downpours…it’s too wet to go without a rain coat, but it’s so warm that it’s gross. I’m just glad we didn’t have to take the bus! The bus would have been pretty yucky today.

There she goes, my little WetCoast kindergartener. She is already excited about tomorrow (today was just an hour) and she can’t wait until next week when full days start!

And so a year passes

This time last year we were getting ready for J to start at her new daycare.

She was excited and little and seemed so grown up at the same time.

Friday was her last day at her daycare. Now that's she is three, she gets to moved up to 3-5 daycare from toddler daycare. There will be a little more structure in her routine, a little more consistency in her day, a little more time to be independent and a lot of growing up.

She was both excited and a bit anxious about her last day at her daycare. She loves her teachers and she has a few good buddies, but none of them are moving on with her. One of her best buds is already at the new daycare and has been eagerly awaiting J's arrival. The last few weeks have been tough for J because she was the oldest and the new group of kids is so much younger (the oldest in the new group turned two in July)...we've had a bit of regression, but it's all good. She is so excited about her new daycare and hanging out with her old buddy...

last day of daycare

We loved her toddler daycare - her teachers were amazing and she has a few good little friends. I have met with the new daycare and I feel like it's a good fit (although we'll see how it is after Labour Day) for J...

Time to make a big change...

In my list of things I meant to blog about in the last week and didn't (but still plan to), I mentioned big changes coming...and to ward off any and all rumours, I figured I better start there!

If you have been following my posts over at Get Fit Chicks recently, you know more than you ever wanted to know about my crazy diet.

The quick history (imagine the long history!) is that about six years ago I was unwell for months, but for no obvious reason. I had the very best doctor in the world at the time and she was patient and listened when I told her what was wrong (or what wasn't right) and told me that regardless of what test results say, she thinks most patients know their bodies better than their doctors do and if they think something is wrong, well something is wrong. She eventually made me take a good month off work (in part to determine if this mystery illness was environmental - physical or mental. That experiment was a good one, but had no definitive conclusion) and sent me to see another doctor to get a second opinion just in case she had missed something. More tests, more blood work, same answer: everything falls into the "normal range."

Usually I'd be happy with that. But I wasn't. Something was still wrong.

I was too tired.

I couldn't get out of bed when my alarm went off - it was physically exhausting. Depression was ruled out.

I couldn't exercise. After 15 minutes of light walking, I needed four or five hours of rest to recover.

It was a vicious cycle - I'd hang out with my friends and have a great time visiting and feel better - usually something low key, a meal out or tea in someone's living room - but then I didn't see anyone for ages because that made me tired too and I needed time to recover.

I figured I was going crazy and was prepared to try pretty much anything. I had drained my savings by taking a month off work while working at a place that had no sick leave policy. I was worried. What would happen to me if I got sicker and needed to take more time off. I was picturing packing up the Hobbit Hole and returning to live with my parents. Not really something I wanted to do.

But my doctor figured there were a few things left to try. She told me that modern, Western medicine didn't have the tools to figure out what was going on and help me get better, but that complementary medicine might help. She sent me to a massage therapist and suggested I go see naturopath and if that didn't work, an acupuncturist. And thankfully, while I wasn't entitled to sick leave, we did have decent extended benefit coverage.

Through word of mouth I found a naturopath who specialized in fatigue and headaches (with the fatigue came extremely frequent headaches and migraines every 7 - 10 days). I'd never been to an naturopath before, and I thought this guy was quite interesting - he was also a pharmacist.

And I decided he was a miracle worker! He did some testing, put me on the crazy diet, gave me some of those drops that naturopaths like to give, and added a few supplements to my daily multivitamin (some Omega 3s and something else, maybe more Vitamin C?). He told me I'd see an improvement in the headaches within the first week and they should keep improving over the next 6-8 weeks until they stopped almost entirely. The fatigue would take longer, but I should see an improvement within 4-6 weeks.

He was right about the headaches - the change was almost immediate.

And on day one of the 5th week, the fatigue changed. It didn't go away completely, but I was able to take the short 15 minute walk I used to take every morning without feeling tired. But the end of the 5th week, I could do my morning walk and my longer (45 minute-ish) walk in the afternoon. By the end of the 6th week, I felt great, I was walking in the morning and all the way home in the afternoon (just over 4 kms), and I had energy again.

I stuck to that diet like my lift depended on it. On special occasions like Christmas day, I let myself indulge. Everyone was scared of my diet and wanted to try to accommodate it, but after the first six weeks of super-strictness, I could eat small amounts of the foods on the elimination list, as long as I paid attention to what I was eating and in what quantities.

It worked. And whenever the fatigue would set in again, I would completely eliminate the stuff on the list for a few weeks and slowly add it back in again.

Life was good. But the last two times I've tried to do it, there have been no great results.

So, to head off another spiral of unhappy health, last week I decided it was time to go back to the naturopath.

I've been seeing another naturopath since the birth of J - this one specializes in women's health, pre- and post-natal women, and pediatrics, so I felt like she was a good fit.

And the new plan might just be crazier than the old plan. She did a test to make sure my hormones are fairly stable, my thyroid isn't out of whack, and to check a couple of other things, but I'm basically going to be doing the GAPS diet and using a cookbook called Nourishing Traditions. I've been doing some research and there's all kinds of interesting information about both of those. GAPS is often used for people with autism, but seems to also have been effective in dealing with fatigue. I'm glad it's winter because there is a lot of soup on this diet for the first little while. I'm not looking forward to the sauerkraut and animal organs...I think I can get away with not using the organs, but probably am stuck with the sauerkraut.

And, because I do most of the cooking and I'm not prepared to make two different dinners every night, J and Alex are going to have to get used to eating strange stuff too! The naturopath thinks three months should be enough time to sort everything out and then, like the last crazy diet, I should be able to add things from the NO list in small quantities, some more occasionally than others.

There are going to be some big challenges - especially with the holidays around the corner - but I don't want to end up where I was six years ago, so if doing this now will prevent that, well, let's do it!

New beginnings?

I did something I don't normally do. Something that I most definitely, certainly, for sure have not done since this blog started four and a half-ish years ago.

I changed the design. And the layout.

I'm not sure if I love it yet, but it was time for a change.

My life is changing right now and has been rapidly changing for the last three or so months (no, J is not going to be a big sister) and I decided it was time for a change here too.

What do you think of the layout? What do you think of the design?

We'll see how it goes...I'm expecting things will shift a bit in the next little while as I experiment a bit, but for now, I'm liking this. Definitely liking this!

Shuffle shuffle shuffle

So far 2010 has been a year full of all kinds of professional changes for me and for Alex. There have been changes in hours, in shifts, in bosses, in coworkers, in job descriptions, and soon, the last change we thought for at least a few months, a change in job location. Still in the same general area, but a new office for one of us.

Of course all of these changes have meant changes to day care scheduling and our daily routine. We thought the most recent change was going to be the last one for a while and it meant great things for us. Alex was around at night - I got to see him, J got to spend more time (and better quality time) with her daddy, Alex could hang out with friends and our weekends were actually full weekends because no one had to work until 2:00 am on Saturday mornings. It was great. It also took a lot of adjusting and I think, after three weeks, we are pretty close to having a new schedule that works well for all three of us and that we all like.

And of course, just as I was getting used to it and really loving it, it changed. Again. And now, we're heading back to the crap schedule. I'm not looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to readjusting the schedules again. I'm not looking forward to changing the daycare arrangements again. I'm not looking forward to going to my boss and saying, well, yet again, I need to adjust the hours I work - is that okay? Again?

But mostly, mostly I'm not looking forward to long evenings alone. To Saturday and Sunday mornings occupying J and keeping her from going in to wake Alex up (even more complicated now since she can open all the doors in our house). To hardly seeing my husband anymore.

Excuse me while I go sulk.

That's all.

PS I get that I shouldn't be whining because, hey, we both have jobs and we have relatively flexible daycare and I have a very supportive and flexible (new) boss and all that. But I'm tired. And I feel like whining. Hmmmphf
